Bohemia and Moravia, the Cultural Field of Germans and Czechs
Míla Sasková-Pierce, PhD
The Czech lands went through a tumultuous history involving many nationalities. Over the centuries, Czechs and Germans lived side by side in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. There were intermarriages, cultural collaborations, and competitions. Charles University in Prague, founded in 1348, attracted European intellectual elite throughout the centuries, including Copernicus and Einstein.
Wars of succession and religious strife undid many Czech intellectual achievements. However, the shared territory created a space for unique cultural endeavors, the achievements of which became a part of true European culture. During the German and later Czech immigration waves, these achievements contributed to US society, and became a part of the Greater Germania, and Greater Czechia diasporas. Dr. Saskova-Pierce will include personal experiences from Prague, as shown in this 1968 picture of her confronting Russian soldiers. She will also discuss the relationships of Czech and Bohemian immigrants to German immigrants in Nebraska.

Presentations and discussions would be of interest to those tracing their German heritage. Please join us for this session and bring a friend! Sessions are open to the public and visitors are always welcome.

Hands on Research at W. Dale Clark Library in Omaha
9:00 am to 1:00 pm
Carpool to Omaha W. Dale Clark Library
Germanic Genealogy Day
Devote a day to your German genealogy research! Cosponsored by the Greater Omaha Genealogical Society All Things German group and the Lincoln-Lancaster County Genealogical Society Germanic Interest Group. This event is a great opportunity to meet and socialize with other Germanic genealogy researchers, learn some new skills, and do some hands-on research in the W. Dale Clark Library Genealogy Room. The program includes:
"Find Your Roots in Germanic Farm Histories," presented by Gail Blankenau. Finding your Germanic farming ancestors can be a challenge. Whether they were Vollbauers (full farmers) or Kötters(cottagers), the farm history is a powerful research tool: a timeline that reveals who farmed a specific piece of land. These histories are compiled from original documents, like land records, tax lists, marriage contracts, and probates.
"Using the Meyers Orts Gazetteer and Hansen's Map Guides to German Parish Records for Genealogical Research," presented by Brenda Boyd.Finding that ancestral village--or farm!--can be a challenge, especially in Germanic regions where administrative boundaries and place names have changed many times over the last centuries. Learn how to use two of the main research aids for Germanic genealogy to solve those mysteries of place.
A light lunch will be provided with time to connect with other researchers, as well as an opportunity to research in the Genealogy Room, assisted by staff and volunteers.
We will plan to carpool to arrive in Omaha at the genealogy room on third floor of Dale Clark by 10:00 when the library opens. Each carpool group will determine how long they stay to work.

Starting with our immigrant ancestors, we will look at sources that are helpful in following our ancestors back through the centuries.

British Interest Group - Victorian Photograph Workshop
2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Walt Branch Library 6701 South 14th St., Lincoln, NE
It is true, Genealogists LOVE photographs, especially if they have OUR ancestors in them. It is also true "a picture is worth a thousand words".
Bring an old photo or two that you have, subjects known or unknown to Sunday's afternoon session. Also, if you are fortunate to own one of the old ornate photo albums (often velvet, with cardboard photos or tintypes inserted between the thick pages) please bring it to show the group.
We will learn about the different types of photographs during the times of our ancestors.
This is a much requested genealogy topic.
We will look at early photographs from the 18 and early 1900s. We will practice analyzing them to help place them in their proper time. using the photo and fashion "clues" we can find.
Photographs were universal and so the British Interest Group invites everyone who has ancestor photos to join in the "Photo event" this Sunday.
Walt Branch Library 6701 South 14th St., Lincoln, NE
Join Tom McFarland who recently attended DNA sessions at the National Genealogical Society Conference.
Many people are confused about which type of DNA test to do. We will spend the first half of the session discussing how to make that choice. For the second half, we will look at a formula for using the X DNA in a very surprising way.

Needing a boost to get started writing your family history? Looking for a painless jumpstart? We'll be inviting people with experience in helping folks like us find the best method to get started. On Sept. 7th Charley Kempthorne from Manhattan Kansas will present techniques he has used in helping genealogists tell their stories.
At our Sept. 9th meeting, we'll explore other times and settings to experience options available from other folks who encourage us to make the time to create those nuggets of information for our own enjoyment as well as for others to gain insights. We'll work together to get speakers and supporters that will help us achieve our goals for preserving family histories.
On Sunday the 7th bring your favorite writing tools, antique or techie, and allow Charley to guide you with methods he has discovered after years of experience. Enter the south meeting room (Room 1). You can learn more about Charley by going to www.thelifestoryinstitute.com

2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Walt Branch Library 6701 South 14th St., Lincoln, NE
You are invited to the British & Irish Interest Group (BIIG) Sunday Computer Workshop“Making Sense of the Census”.
Whether you know the exact county in Britain or Ireland where your ancestors lived or not, come Sunday afternoon as we discuss the British, Irish, Scottish and Welsh census records and where to find them.
If you have a laptop or iPad bring it so you can do your own searches during the workshop. (No computer? No problem. We will be working together in small groups to help each other.)
Bring your ancestor’s pedigree and family group sheet for the British ancestor you are researching. You will need:
· Ancestor’s Name, and their Birth or Marriage Date and Location of event.
· If you have parents, siblings or spouse names, and other dates or information that is always helpful.
We will be mapping our search locations so we can meet others who are searching in our area. (Map is on page 1 of the handout)
Also, be thinking about what you want to learn about your British & Irish Ancestors. Do you want to:
· Learn how my ancestor lived.
· Find where they lived, e.g. house or farm.
· Find their parish church, where they were baptized, married, buried.
· Identify their siblings & parents.
· Identify living relatives, cousins.
· Extend pedigree back another generation.
To get started, print and take a look at the “handout” for Sunday’s workshop. Bring it with you Sunday. (If you have trouble with the link in this email, go to the website and access the British Interest Group announcement located on the right side of the main menu. Click on “View Full Listing” and go to the link at the bottom of the announcement. Reply to this email and let me know if you have trouble printing a copy of the handout.)
Remember to bring with you Sunday:
1. Printed copy of the handout.
2. Pedigree Chart & Family Group Sheet for your British or Irish Ancestor.
3. Decide what you would like to learn about your ancestor.
4. Your laptop or iPad to do searches (optional).
I look forward to seeing you Sunday for a fun and “productive” afternoon as we “Make Sense of the Census”.
